Solar Battery Guide

Is a Solar Battery Worth It in Australia in 2026? Costs, Savings and Payback Explained

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program changed on 1 May 2026. Here is what a home battery costs, what you can realistically save, and how to work out if it pays off for your household.

Quick answer

For many Australian households with solar panels, a battery is worth it in 2026, especially with higher evening usage and a well-sized system. Payback commonly lands somewhere between 4 and 10 years, depending on your usage, tariff and installed cost. If you use little power at night or the battery is oversized, the numbers get much weaker.

A home battery stores the extra solar energy your panels produce during the day, so you can use it in the evening instead of buying it back from the grid. The big question is whether the savings on your power bill outweigh the upfront cost. This guide walks through each part of that calculation.

The 2026 battery rebate: what changed

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program started on 1 July 2025. It gives you an upfront discount on an eligible home battery through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), and your installer deducts it from your quote.

1 Jul 2025Program start date for the federal battery discount
1 May 2026Rebate restructured: tiered by battery size
Up to 100 kWhEligible battery size (STCs are only created up to 50 kWh)

From 1 May 2026, smaller batteries still receive the full discount, while larger batteries receive a lower discount as their size increases. The rebate now also steps down more frequently over time to reflect falling battery prices.

  • Your discount depends on battery size and on when it is installed.
  • The rebate is based on usable battery capacity, the STC factor and the STC price.
  • A bigger battery does not always mean a bigger rebate, so sizing matters.

Rebate rates change often. Always check the current figures on the official Cheaper Home Batteries Program page (DCCEEW) and make sure your quote shows the exact discount you receive.

What does a home battery cost?

Prices vary a lot by brand, capacity, inverter compatibility and installation. In general, the larger the battery, the more you pay. The final price on your quote should show the system cost, the rebate deducted and what you actually pay.

What affects priceWhy it matters
Battery capacity (kWh)More storage costs more, but extra capacity you never use will not pay itself back.
Brand and warrantyA cheap battery with weak warranty cover can cost more in the long run.
Inverter typeSome solar systems need an inverter upgrade or a hybrid inverter.
Backup powerBlackout backup can be an extra cost on top of the battery.
Install complexitySwitchboard condition, cable runs and location change the labour cost.

How a battery saves you money

  • Use your own solar at night. Stored daytime solar replaces power you would otherwise buy at peak evening rates.
  • Earn less from low feed-in tariffs, save more on high tariffs. The gap between what you are paid for exports and what you pay for imports drives your savings.
  • Cheaper off-peak charging. On some plans, a battery can also charge from the grid at cheaper times.
  • Blackout protection. Backup is a real benefit but may need extra equipment.

Batteries are only as valuable as the energy patterns in your home. Moving some use to daytime hours, such as laundry or dishwasher, makes the system more cost-effective.

Payback period: how long until it pays off?

Payback is your net installed cost divided by your yearly bill savings. Industry sources commonly quote about 4 to 10 years for a well-sized system, and quality batteries usually carry 10-year warranties. Your own number depends on these factors:

FactorShorter paybackLonger payback
Evening usageHigh, steady use after sunsetLow use at night
Battery sizeMatched to your usageOversized for your home
Electricity tariffHigh peak ratesCheap flat rates
Solar systemLarge system with spare daytime energySmall system, little surplus
Net costFull rebate and fair quoteHigher cost or reduced rebate

These ranges are general industry estimates, not a guarantee. A proper quote should use your actual bills to calculate your own payback.

Is a solar battery right for you?

A battery may suit you if

  • You already have solar and export a lot of it
  • Your household uses most power in the evening
  • You pay high peak electricity rates
  • You want backup during outages

You may want to wait if

  • You use very little power after sunset
  • Your solar system is small or old
  • You plan to move soon
  • The quote pushes a much larger battery than you need

Because the rebate now steps down more often, waiting has a cost too. If a battery already makes sense for your home, getting a correctly sized system sooner can capture a stronger discount than later.

Before you sign a battery quote

  1. Check the exact rebate. Your quote should clearly show the discount for your battery size and install date.
  2. Ask for the final out-of-pocket cost. Not just the headline price.
  3. Check warranty and brand. Look at years, cycles and who honours the warranty locally.
  4. Confirm inverter compatibility. Ask if any upgrade is needed.
  5. Ask about install timing. Installers should only promise what they can deliver.

Frequently asked questions

Is the federal battery rebate still available in 2026?

Yes. The Cheaper Home Batteries Program continues, but since 1 May 2026 the discount is tiered by battery size and reduces more frequently over time.

Can I get a battery without solar panels?

Yes, a battery can charge from the grid, but the savings are usually much stronger when it is paired with solar. Ask your installer to model both options.

How long does a home battery last?

Quality batteries commonly come with around 10-year performance warranties and a usable life beyond that, but check the warranty terms of the specific model.

Is a bigger battery always better?

No. An oversized battery costs more and rarely saves in proportion. Match the size to your evening usage and solar output.

Will a battery eliminate my power bill?

Not usually. It reduces how much you buy from the grid, but you may still have supply charges and some peak-time usage.
